Languages

Languages

Your Hotelwize website can run in as many languages as you need. Each language has its own content, its own URLs, and its own translations, and you decide which languages visitors can see.

To manage them, go to Settings > Advanced > Languages in the left-side menu.

The page lists the languages of your website. The Summary panel on the right shows how many languages you have, how many are published, and which one is the default.

Add a language

  1. Click Add New and choose the language from the list. Languages you have already added are not shown.
  2. Click Save.

A new language starts without content. Translate it while it is hidden, then publish it when it is ready.

If the language you need is not in the list, contact support@hotelwize.com and we will add it for you.

Change a language's name and URL

Click the Edit (pencil) icon on the language. You can change:

  • Name: the full name of the language, as visitors see it in the language switcher.
  • Short name: the abbreviation, for example EN or EL.
  • URL slug: the part that identifies the language in your website addresses, for example /el/rooms.

The default values are the recommended ones. Change them only if you have a reason to.

Next to Name and Short name there is a Translate button. Use it to write the language's name in each of your website's languages, so the switcher reads correctly whichever language the visitor is browsing.

Publish or hide a language

Each language row has a toggle. Turn it off and the language is hidden from the live website, while you can still edit and preview its content in the admin panel. Turn it on when the language is ready.

This is the recommended way to work on a new language: add it, translate the content while it is hidden, then turn the toggle on and publish the website.

The default language is always published and cannot be hidden.

Set the default language

Open the three-dot menu on a language and choose Set as default language, then click Save.

Only one language can be the default. It is the language visitors see when they arrive at your website for the first time, and it is the only language whose slug is left out of the URLs.

Copy the content of the default language

Open the three-dot menu on a language and choose Copy content from default language. The language then contains the pages and content of the default language, ready for you to translate, instead of a set of empty pages. Use it right after you add a language.

Export and import translations for an agency

If a translation agency or a translator works on your content, you can hand over the text as a file instead of giving them access to the admin panel.

  • Export: open the three-dot menu on the language and choose Export Translations. You get an XLIFF file, the standard format that translation tools work with.
  • Import: click Import Translations at the top of the page, choose the translated file and click Upload. Accepted file types are .xliff and .xlf, up to 50 MB, and each file covers one of your configured languages.

Delete a language

Click the Delete (bin) icon on the language. The content of that language is removed with it, so use this only when you are sure the language is no longer needed.

Good to know

  • The fixed labels of your website and booking engine, such as BOOK NOW or Read more, are not part of a language's content. You change those in Customize > Translations.
  • Click Save after any change on this page, then click Publish Website and choose the Live environment to apply your changes to your live site.
